Couples Therapy
When couples are experiencing conflict, it is usually more effective to conduct therapy with both partners present than seeing them separately in individual sessions. With both partners present, Dr. Evans is able to help the couple improve their communication skills and help each partner to better understand the perspective of the other partner. Dr. Evans will usually want to see each partner alone for one or two sessions since individual sessions may help clarify issues more quickly by sidelining some of the defenses that may have developed over time. But the bulk of the work will be conducted with the couple together with Dr. Evans helping to maintain some calm rationality in the process.
It happens sometimes that one partner wants to work on their relationship with a professional therapist but the other partner is resistant to the idea and refuses to participate. In such instances, the willing partner should begin individual therapy to help him/her deal with the relationship issues and the other partners refusal to participate. With time, the resistant partner may change his/her mind and join the process.
