Neurofeedback
What is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback has been shown to be an effective treatment for many of the difficult-to-treat problems of adults as well as children including many emotional and behavioral disorders such as ADD and ADHD. Neurofeedback, also referred to as neurotherapy, EEG biofeedback, or brainwave biofeedback, is a computer based, brain-training technique that can help you develop more control over brainwave activity resulting in improved life functioning. Neurofeedback treatment teaches the client to produce more normal EEG patterns and has now been recognized by the medical community and the media as an effective drug-free treatment for many seemingly intractable disorders. Neurofeedback has been researched in university labs for over 25 years and many people have had success in reducing or eliminating the symptoms for such disorders as:
- ADD / ADHD
- Depression
- Anxiety / Panic Attacks
- Sleep Disorders
- Digestive Disorders
- Alcohol / Drug Addiction
- Hypertension
- Chronic Pain
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
Neurotherapy is frequently used in conjunction with psychotherapy and/or medication when this will achieve the desired outcome. In some cases, including those involving ADD or ADHD, the medication may eventually be reduced or even eliminated.
What is the treatment process?
Through neurofeedback, your brain “learns” to self-regulate the strength and frequency of the electrical activity that controls all aspects of attention, thought, mood, arousal, and behavior. The treatment occurs via computer software which measures brainwaves through sensors that are harmlessly attached to your scalp. When brainwave activity changes in the desired direction, a positive “feedback,” or reward, is given to your brain. Your brain automatically “learns” to modify the brainwaves being monitored into a more efficient form with a corresponding reduction in symptoms. This is operant conditioning for the brain. Over time, positive changes in brain functioning become permanent.
Treatment is designed individually and takes between 20 and 60 sessions for optimum results. Sessions are usually held two or three times per week so that the effects carry over from session to session. Each session lasts about 45 minutes, and sessions can be administered up to two times per day with no reduction in benefits. The changes are usually permanent although brief booster sessions may be needed in the future.
